The USC Trojans (1-0) and CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (1-0) square off at the Galen Center on Thursday. The season began with a close victory for CSU Bakersfield against Southern Utah, 73-72. In a neutral-floor match on Monday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, USC defeated Kansas State 82-69.
Kaleb Higgins, a guard for CSU Bakersfield, returned to the roster for the first time on Monday. Despite missing the last 19 games of the previous season due to a torn meniscus, he did not appear to be affected by the injury on Monday evening. Being the sole Roadrunner to score in double figures, he finished with 27 points on 9 of 19 shots from the field. Higgins became one of the sole two Roadrunners who reached double digits when scoring the previous season. Antavion Collum, a center who moved to McNeese State, was the second. The Roadrunners repeat 2 starters and a total of 7 players from the previous squad, including Higgins.
The Trojans’ offensive hubs the previous campaign were Drew Peterson and Boogie Ellis. Ellis is poised for another successful year; he began Monday’s game versus Kansas State with 24 points, 8 rebounds, as well as 5 assists. Peterson is moving on. Head coach Andy Enfield added to Ellis by bringing in the third-best recruitment class in the United States, which included Isaiah Collier, the second-best player in the country.
