Illinois Analysis: Coming off a strong 36-point win
The Fighting Illini shot 59.3% against Duquesne to follow their 54.2% effort versus Morehead State in the opening round. Senior guard Terrence Shannon Jr. was an offensive standout in both games, and senior forward Marcus Domask put on a show against the Eagles. In Illinois’ 1st-round victory, Domask finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. This made him the 1st player to record a triple-double in an NCAA Tournament match since Murray State’s Ja Morant in 2019. Shannon guided the Fighting Illini to victory over Morehead State with 26 points, and he was even more effective on Saturday, scoring 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field. Against Duquesne, Coleman Hawkins scored 11 points and pulled down 7 rebounds, while fellow senior forward Quincy Guerrier chipped in with 10 and 6 points, respectively.
Iowa St Analysis: They haven’t lost in 5 games
As we head into the round of 16, the Iowa State Cyclones are one of the 2 teams from the Big 12 Conference that are still standing. The Cyclones defeated Washington State 67-56 on Saturday to go to the Sweet 16. The Cyclones trailed 6-0 at the beginning of the game, but they quickly got back on track and outscored the Cougars by 11 in the 2nd half to secure their spot in Boston as one of the East Region’s final 4 teams. After 3 seasons leading the Cyclones, head coach T.J. Otzelberger now has two trips to the Sweet 16.
