On January 29, at Health & PE Arena, the Alabama State Hornets (10-9) will travel to play the Texas Southern Tigers (6-12) in an attempt to extend a 3-game winning streak.
With just four wins in their 1st twelve games of the season, against Oglethorpe, North Carolina A&T, Merrimack, and Mississippi University for Women, the Hornets had a poor start to the season. After that, though, the team has gone 6-1, defeating teams like MS Valley State, AR-Pine Bluff, Johnson University FL, Alcorn State, Alabama A&M, and Prairie View. When the Hornets faced Prairie View in their last game, they led 39–31 going into the locker room. From there, Alabama State was able to maintain the pressure, winning 74-67 with a 36-35 2nd half. Leading the team in scoring with 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists was TJ Madlock. The Hornets’ defense currently ranks 122nd in the nation, allowing 70.2 points per contest. Alabama State will aim to play strong defense once more after limiting Prairie View A&M to a mere 41% shooting in their last match.
Texas Southern had a difficult start to the season as they dropped their first 8 games. However, the Tigers have won six of their past seven games, including victories over Howard, Alabama A&M, MS Valley State, Grambling, College of Biblical Studies, and Alcorn State. By halftime in the Alabama A&M game, the Tigers had taken a 45-30 lead. From there, Texas Southern won 85-69 after scoring an additional 40 points. Deon Stroud, who came off the bench to record 21 points and 5 rebounds, led the team in scoring. The Tigers’ defense, which currently ranks 176th in the country, gives up 72.4 points per game on average. The Texas Southern defense will aim to do a better job of not putting opponents on the line in today’s game against Alabama State.
