Valparaiso Analysis: Cooper Schwieger coming off a 28 point game
In their regular season finale on Senior Day Sunday at home against Illinois State, Valparaiso ended an 11-game losing streak. The Beacons concluded 3-17 in MVC play and 7-24 overall at the end of the regular season, which sent them to the cellar. Valparaiso had an advantage of 13 points at the half versus Illinois State, leading 44–31. With 1:27 left in regulation, the Beacons trailed 69-68, but they responded with 5 straight points to grab a 73-69 lead. They held on for the win the entire way, not allowing Illinois State to get any closer than one. In order to counterbalance Illinois State’s 53.6% shooting percentage for the game, Valparaiso won the rebounding battle 31–26 and shot 52.5% from the field, particularly 10 of 25 from 3-point range. In the victory, Cooper Schwieger scored 28 points to lead the Beacons.
Belmont Analysis: On a 3-game winning run
Belmont defeated Evansville at home in the final game of the regular season, having won 7 of the previous 8 matches, including the final 3. The Bruins finished the regular season with an overall record of 19-12 and with a 12-8 record in MVC play. Belmont fell behind Evansville 8–0 at the beginning of the game and continued to trail by 8 until finishing the half on a 29–9 run to lead by 12 at the break. In order to win, the Bruins led by as much as 26 points in the 2nd half. Belmont restricted Evansville to 36.8% shooting for the game while shooting 50% from the field, especially 11 of 27 from three-point range.
