The 23rd-ranked Memphis Tigers and the ranked 22 Virginia Cavaliers will square off in a Top 25 matchup on Tuesday at the FedEx Forum. Virginia remains 9-1 overall, while Memphis stands 8-2 overall. The Cavaliers record 5-1 in their past 6 matches contested in December, while the Tigers have prevailed in 18 of their previous 20 matches at home.
One of the nation’s top defensive-minded squads is Virginia. According to KenPom, they have the second-best defense throughout the nation, play one among the slowest tempos within the league, and are superb three-point scorers who also handle the basketball. The Cavaliers just defeated Northeastern 56–54 at home on their most disastrous shooting evening of the season. They shot a dismal 14% from downtown, 41% from within the arc, and 54% from the free throw line, which is unusual for them. In their first genuine away match versus Memphis on Tuesday, the Cavaliers triumphed despite a poor shooting evening thanks to their defense. The Cavaliers will have to play quicker than they are accustomed to, but they can still score with Memphis if they protect the ball well and shoot at least 37% from deep.
Memphis, with their 30th-ranked KenPom defense, operates at some of the quickest tempos in NCAA basketball and has an above-average shooting team from all angles, but they struggle at times with ball handling. The Tigers will take on teams ranked in the top 100 KenPom for the 7th time in their history. Memphis has scored more than seventy-nine points in eight of its ten games this season, going 5-2 versus those D1 giants. Memphis can score baskets against Virginia, and they have experience playing in tough games both at home and on the road. They aren’t particularly good shooters from any distance, but they do better on both sides of the arc, steal more offensive rebounds than Virginia, and have a chance to score some second-chance points.
