Game Preview

College basketball play takes place from Hammel Court on January 19 between the Wagner Seahawks (8-7) and Merrimack Warriors (9-9).

During their first ten games of the season, Wagner had a shaky 4-6 run, winning just against Molloy, NJIT, Stony Brook, and Coppin State. Since then, though, the team has gone 4-1 with victories over Manhattan, Gwynedd-Mercy, St. Francis PA, and Stonehill and a defeat to Long Island U. At halftime of their last game against Stonehill, the Seahawks had a commanding 32-19 advantage. Even though Wagner was behind 35–32 after that, they managed to hold on for the 64–54 win. Javier Ezquerra led the team in scoring with 16 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Wagner’s defense has been strong this year, giving up only 62.1 points per game. In their last 2 wins, they gave up just 54 and 56 points. The Seahawks can score more points offensively; they now score 64.5 points on a pitiful 38.7% shooting percentage.

Merrimack started the year with a 6–8. These victories occurred against Felician, Bucknell, UMass Lowell, North Carolina A&T, Maine, and Worcester State. After defeating Sacred Heart, Le Moyne, and Fairleigh Dickinson, the Warriors next faced Central Connecticut. In their last matchup with Central Connecticut, the Warriors entered the locker room behind 36–28. After that, Merrimack improved with a 42–39 run, but ultimately lost 75–70. Top scorer on the team with 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists was Jordan Derkack. Merrimack has performed below average offensively, scoring 69.1 points on 44.3% shooting, while their defense has improved slightly, allowing 68.8 points. It’s important to note they gave up 75 in their most recent defeat to snap their winning run. Merrimack’s season leader, Jordan Derkack, has averaged a team-high 17.8 points and 6 rebounds each contest.
