At JMA Wireless Dome on Wednesday, the Canisius Golden Griffins will kick off their campaign by taking on the Syracuse Orange.
It will undoubtedly be weird to watch Syracuse huddle this upcoming campaign without Jim Boeheim in charge. Boeheim resigned as head coach following the 2022–2023 season, having served for nearly 50 years. Adrian Autry, a notable player for Syracuse under Boeheim in the 1990s, was hired by the Orange to take his place. In Boeheim’s previous campaign, the Orange won only 17 matches and were not selected to the NCAA Tournament. 3 of the 5 starters from the previous squad are back for Autry, the most prominent being PG Judah Mintz. With the All-ACC Rookie member withdrawing his name from the NBA Draft, Autry suddenly has a legitimate differential factor in the backcourt that can succeed against an increasingly aggressive Orange defense. Autry was successful in luring guard JJ Starling, an All-ACC rookie, from Notre Dame alongside the returning starters.
With the new campaign beginning, the spotlights are focused on the Canisius Golden Griffins and their attempt to rebound from their 10–20 loss the previous year. The Griffins, led by the astute Reggie Witherspoon, are primed for a remarkable comeback story given the fierce rivalry of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Griffins’ poor performance in the previous season was evident in their average of only 70 points per match and their 75 defensive turnovers, which told tales of their difficulties on the court.
Jordan Henderson, the team’s top scorer, departed, creating a vacuum that will hopefully be filled by a group of players who are all eager to contribute. The focus will be on Tahj Staveskie, whose spectacular debut season portends a thrilling follow-up. His ambition is elevated, ready to take charge and make each possession matter, averaging 12.4 points per game.
