On Thursday, the Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-3) and Creighton Bluejays (5-1) square off.
In his 7th year leading the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team, Mike Boynton has had a difficult start to the campaign. With defeats to Abilene Christian (64-59), St. Bonaventure (66-64), as well as Notre Dame (66-64), the club is off to a meager 3-3 start. The Cowboys, though, might finally be gaining some traction. More recently, they have easily defeated Houston Christian (92-65) and New Orleans (96-68). They’re off to a strong 5-1 beginning this season and hope to build on their success. They are now ranked 15th according to the AP Poll as a result. The Bluejays have defeated Loyola Chicago (88-65) and Iowa (92-84) in their last meeting, although they were thoroughly outclassed in their most recent contest. That happened to be the Kansas City Hall of Fame Classic championship game against Colorado State (69-48). Creighton was thoroughly defeated in the final game. The Bluejays had a dismal offensive showing, shooting only 27.9% from the floor and 20.7% from beyond the arc. They also dropped their turnover and rebound contests. The most prolific player on an individual basis has been Baylor Scheierman, who leads the team in scoring with 18.2 points per game and rebounds with 7 per match. He is joined in the backcourt by Trey Alexander, who adds 15.8 points per game and sets team records for assists via 4.7 assists per contest and steals with 1 steal per game.
