Game Preview

On January 17, the UConn Huskies (15-2) will host the Creighton Bluejays (13-4) at Gampel Pavilion.

The Huskies’ top scorer, senior guard Cam Spencer, who attended Rutgers last season, averages 15.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. 51.4% of his field goals are making contact, with a scorching 46.8% coming from 3-point range and an impressive 87.5% from the free throw line. In his previous five matches, he has scored in double figures 7 times, including his 20 points and 7 rebounds in the victory against Georgetown. On November 14, he scored a season-high 25 points against Mississippi Valley State in an 87-53 victory. Alex Karaban, a sophomore forward averaging 9.3 points on the squad that won the national title the previous year, has advanced even further this year. Karaban averages 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 17 games, all of which he has started.

Through the initial eleven matches of the season, the Bluejays have won 9-2, losing only to UNLV and Colorado State. After losing to Villanova and Marquette in back-to-back games, Creighton went on to defeat Georgetown, Providence, DePaul, and St. John’s in the following four games. It was a tight call for the Bluejays in their last game against St. John’s. Before the 2nd half, Creighton led 35–30, but in order to win 66–65, they had to hang on amid a 35–31 disadvantage. Baylor Scheierman doubled up with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Ryan Kalkbrenner, the team’s top scorer, finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Trey Alexander, a junior guard, is another offensive weapon. He has averaged 16.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.1 steals in 17 games (all starts) while playing a team-high 34.9 minutes.
