Game Preview
On Tuesday, October 7th in Philadelphia is the Drexel Dragons‘ campaign opening against the La Salle Explorers.
The La Salle Explorers, who finished 15-19 overall, particularly 7-11 in A-10 conference games, enter the 2023–24 season looking to improve on a disappointing 2022–23 campaign. In the A-10 conference tournament, La Salle defeated Duquesne and Rhode Island before losing to Fordham during the quarterfinals. Josh Nickelberry will need to be replaced by the Explorers, but both point guard Jhamir Brickus and top shooter Khalil Brantley are back. Brantley led the team in scoring the previous season with an average of 14.3 points per contest. In the course of the regular season, he had his greatest game versus Rhode Island, scoring 29 points and pulling down 8 rebounds. For La Salle, the front court is the main source of trouble. Newcomer Milos Kovacevic, a Serbian junior college transfer, will be in charge of this side of the squad. Although the remainder of the starting roster continues to be up in the air, La Salle is anticipated to underperform this year after raising a lot of eyebrows the previous season.
Drexel finished the previous campaign with an overall 16-14 record. The Dragons ended their season with a loss to North Carolina Wilmington during the second round of the CAA playoffs, after defeating Monmouth in the opening round. Drexel achieved their longest victory streak of the previous season with three consecutive victories. During the 2022–23 campaign, Drexel allowed 62.4 points per match while scoring 66.7 points per contest on 43% shooting. 6 of the Dragons’ top 7 scorers from the previous year are back for the 2023–24 campaign, meaning they will have a sizable roster returning. Amari Williams, a senior forward averaging 13.7 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game, will be crucial in the forthcoming contest. He was excellent in all three of their previous games played in Philadelphia, notably a 14-point double-double in the team’s victory over La Salle in the previous campaign.
