The 11-2 Illinois Illini (11-2) go to Indiana for a clash with the Purdue Boilermakers (13-1) on the court on Friday evening in a game that might have implications for the top slot within the BIG 10.
With good cause, Zach Edey could be the most well-known college basketball player this year. At 7 ‘4 and 300 pounds, Edey averages 23.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for the nation’s top squad. Though Illinois lacks a large 7-foot player, they do have a potent frontcourt that can match the big man with a number of forwards and centers. Purdue comes in riding a six-game victory streak, their lone defeat coming away from Northwestern on their travels. Edey scored 23 points and pulled down 12 boards in their most recent victory over Maryland. The star player at Purdue, Edey, has scored more points than any other player in all but three of the team’s contests this year. This season, Edey has registered 35 points in a pair of separate games. When he is inside the paint, he controls it.
Terrence Shannon Jr., the team’s leading scorer, was recently banned by the Illinois basketball team following allegations of sexual assault. Many were curious about Illinois’s reaction versus Northwestern in their initial real test without him. They defeated Northwestern’s Wildcats, who had previously given Purdue its lone setback of the year, by a score of thirty. The whole game, Illinois maintained an advantage that was never in doubt. Quincy Guerrier recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the victory, while Marcus Domask paced the way with 32 points. Domask, a 6’6 senior, has assumed the role of team leader in scoring after finishing with 32 points against Northwestern. Domask has reached double figures in his previous 4 matches and has an average of 13.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
