The Providence Friars have a 9-2 record and are off to a quick start in 2023–24. On Tuesday evening, the Friars begin conference play having won their previous two games. This season, Ed Cooley went on to coach Georgetown, but behind brand-new head coach Kim English, things are going well so far. The Friars defeated Sacred Heart University 78-64 on Saturday to increase their record at home this season to 8-0. Leading the way with 26 points and 12 boards for his 4th double-double of the year was Bryce Hopkins. Devin Carter and Corey Floyd were the Friars’ two injured players during the game, but they expect to both return against the Golden Eagles.
This season, as they prepare to compete in the Big East, the Golden Eagles aim to jump to the forefront of the standings and have a strong run in the College Basketball Tournament. With a 9-2 record, the squad enters in ranked 6th in the nation. With a 17-3 record in the regular campaign, featuring a split of the campaign’s series with Providence, the Golden Eagles captured the league title. Marquette defeated St. Thomas 84–79 at home on Thursday evening. Over the course of the last two seasons, the Golden Eagles have gone on to win 17 consecutive matches at home. On Thursday evening, they had 5 individuals score in double digits, with Oso Ighodaro leading the club with 21 points. With 12 points as well as 10 assists, Tyler Kolek recorded his initial double-double of the year, and the Golden Eagles hit 50% overall from the field.
