On Monday, November 6th, the South Carolina Gamecocks and the South Carolina Upstate Spartans will play a game at Colonial Life Arena. This match will mark the first game of the season for these teams.
The South Carolina Upstate Spartans enter the 2023–24 season hoping to improve on their respectable 16–16 overall record, which included a 10–8 record in Big South Conference play, in 2022–2023. USC Upstate, the number four seeded during the Big South tournament, would fall to UNC-Asheville after a close victory over Gardner-Webb. Although the Spartans had been invited to the CBI, Indiana State easily defeated them in the opening round. The Spartans are without their top scorer, Jordan Gainey, but they gain back two players who score in double figures: Justin Bailey, who had 10.6 points per game and Trae Broadnax , who finished with 11.1 point per contest. They also welcome back important players who were sidelined last season, including Jalen Breazeale and Andrew McConnell.
The South Carolina Gamecocks enter the 2023–24 campaign hoping to recover after a disappointing campaign in which they ended 4–14 in SEC play and 11–21 overall under the first-year coach Lamont Paris. After losing to Ole Miss during the first round of the SEC tournament, the Gamecocks’ campaign was swiftly over. Chico Carter Jr, Hayden Brown, and GG Jackson were cut by the Gamecocks, but Meechie Johnson is back following a campaign in which he scored 12.7 points per game and dished out 3.6 assists on average. In order to provide depth for their lineup, the Gamecocks also made a strong push through the transfer portal, pulling in BJ Mack via Wofford, with 16.6 points per game, Stephen Clark out of the Citadel, with 16.3 points per match, and Ta’Lon Cooper via Minnesota, who produced an average of 9.8 per contest.
