On Monday, November 6th, the California Golden Bears will play their first game of the 2023–24 campaign versus the Saint Thomas Tommies.
The St. Thomas Tommies enter the campaign hoping to build on their 9-win advancement from 2022–2023 and their 19–14 and 9–9 Summit League results. However, because they were in the second year of a five-year phase of transition from D-III to D–I, they were not eligible for participation in the postseason. The Tommies are attempting to replace two players who scored in double figures last season: Riley Miller and highest scorer Andrew Rohde, but they also have Parker Bjorklund back. Raheem Anthony, who transferred from Saint Mary’s-Minnesota, joins the Tommies as well. Anthony shot 42.3% from beyond the arc the previous campaign and averaged 24.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. Given St. Thomas’s propensity to dish out threes, Anthony will blend in well with the Tommies.
The Cal Golden Bears had a terrible 2022–2023 period, going 3-29 overall and 2–18 in Pac-12 conference action. They then began the first year of the Mark Madsen era. Although the Bears lost a good deal of their talented players from the previous year, they still have Devin Askew back, who missed a good deal of time yet still averaged 15.5 points per game. The Bears made a big splash through the transfer portal, acquiring Jalen Cone, who averaged 17.6 points per game and 2.5 assist per game, from Northern Arizona, Jaylon Tyson from Texas Tech, and Memphis’ Keonte Kennedy, in addition to double-double monster Fardaws Almaq from Texas Tech, with 11.1 point per contest and an average of 7.9 rebounds per match. In terms of talent, it’s a positive move for Cal, but Madsen still has a bit of work to do ahead of the new season.
