Game Preview
To begin their individual NCAA Basketball seasons, the Stony Brook Seawolves will take on the St. John’s Red Storm on November 7th at Carnesecca Arena.
The 5th campaign of head coach Geno Ford’s leadership of the men’s basketball team at Stony Brook University is about to begin. Ford had a challenging campaign last year because his program only went 11–22. The Seawolves finished 10th overall in the league with a 6-12 record in Colonial Athletic Association competition. In the CAA tournament, Stony Brook managed to upset 7th-ranked North Carolina A&T within the initial round before losing to College of Charleston during the quarterfinals. This campaign the expectations are again rather low.
During the 2022–23 campaign, Stony Brook allowed 69.1 points per contest while scoring 63.1 points per match on 41% shooting. Leading rebounder Frankie Policelli, who almost averaged a double-double the previous season, will need to be replaced, but the Seawolves are fortunate to have senior Tyler Stephenson-Moore back. The opportunity to participate at Carnesecca and the match ought to thrill the Queens native, but generally, this will be a difficult test for SBU to begin their season.
St. John’s finished 18–15 in the previous campaign, including 7–13 in Big East competition. This campaign has the potential to be different regarding the Red Storm, since renowned Bluegrass and Northeastern coach Rick Pitino takes the helm and returns to the Power Five after leading Iona to two 25-victory periods and tournament appearances. The Red Storm has not won 20 matches for the 4th consecutive year.
Pitino is bringing with him three new players from Iona: Sadiku Ibine Ayo, Daniss Jenkins, as well as Cruz Davis. Jenkins, who averaged 15.6 points per contest the previous season, was named the MVP of the MAAC Tournament. Two more freshmen will cover the voids left by six more transfers to the team. Three-star Brady Dunlap along with four-star Simeon Wilcher are two of the newly arrived freshmen.
