When the eighth-seeded South Alabama Jaguars play the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in the 2023 Sun Belt Tournament championship game on Monday, two scorching-hot teams will square off. For the first time since 2009, the Jaguars, who have won 11 of their last 13 games, have advanced to the title game. The Ragin’ Cajuns, who have won 15 of their last 18 games, are participating in the league championship game for the second time in a row.
Terence Lewis II, a senior forward, is one of three Ragin’ Cajuns that average double-digit scoring. On Sunday night, he defeated Texas State in the semifinals with 10 points and 7 rebounds. In the quarterfinal victory over Georgia Southern, he notched a double-double by scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. His seventh double-double of the year was this one.
Themus Fulks, a sophomore guard, helped Louisiana defeat Texas State in the semifinals by contributing five points, seven rebounds, and five assists. He averages 8.9 points, three rebounds, six assists, and one steal a game this season. Fulks had an eight point, 4.5 assist, and 3.5 rebound average in his two games versus South Alabama this year. He has had two double-doubles this year, including a performance of 13 points and 11 rebounds against Arkansas State.
Senior guard Isaiah Moore, who led the Jaguars to a 75-66 semifinal victory over James Madison on Sunday, led the team with 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists. He has averaged 17 points or more per game throughout the tournament, including 20 points and seven assists on Thursday in a 68-61 victory over Appalachian State.
In the Sun Belt semifinals, senior center Kevin Samuel, a transfer from Florida Gulf Coast, was a force on the glass. Even though he only had four points, he had 12 rebounds and has now scored in double figures in three of the last five games. Samuel averages 10 points and 9.1 rebounds per game this season.
