Game Preview

On a neutral field at the Cotton Bowl Stadium on Saturday October 7th, the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners will face off in the Red River Showdown in an effort to see who will remain unbeaten and provide a potential Heisman Trophy campaign for players like Quinn Ewers and Dillon Gabriel.

The Texas offense exploded for 661 yards in their home opener against Kansas, throwing 325 yards and rushing for 336 yards. Since 2021 against Texas Tech, the Longhorns gained more than 300 yards passing and rushing in the same contest for the seventh time in program history.

Although OU has encountered a lot of maximum protection up to this point, their improved defensive line is continuing to find ways to apply pressure, keeping opposition quarterbacks’ passing efficiency ratings to the seventh-lowest in the nation. So the Longhorns will have to trust that quarterback Quinn Ewers can stay calm and accurate while facing multiple rushing defenders and a lot of pressure.

As for the Sooners, the passing game has been great under Dillon Gabriel but this offense is still lacking in rushing power. The Longhorns are averaging 191.8 rushing yards per game, while the Sooners are averaging 157.6, that’s 34.2 yards of difference that could make a big difference in a game where historically it goes down to which team rushed for more yards.

With a scoring average of 47.4 points per game, the Sooners have the third-best scoring offense in NCAA football this year. All five of their victories have been by a margin of no less than two touchdowns, including a crushing 50-20 victory over Iowa State the previous week.

This will be a great matchup between two quarterbacks looking for something to prove. Ewers’ team is now ranked 19th in EPA/Play this season and after finishing outside the top 100 the previous year, it has improved its explosive pass rate inside the top 10.

But Gabriel has been faultless this season, designing the finest offensive in the nation in terms of pass success rate. With 15 touchdown throws and just 1 interception while averaging almost 10 yards per dropback, he has completed 79% of his deliveries.
