On November 23, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (5-6) and the No. 12 Ole Miss Rebels (9-2) square off in the 2023 Egg Bowl.
Mississippi defeated the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 35-3 to round out their home schedule. Jaxson Dart, the quarterback, passed for 3 touchdowns and 310 yards. The Rebels will enjoy their second 10-win campaign under head coach Lane Kiffin if they triumph. This season, Jaxson has only experienced two difficulties, both away from home, at Georgia and Alabama. He has 12 throwing scores and 4 running touchdowns in six of his last seven games. Only two of the 179 tosses in total have been intercepted. Ole Miss will be expecting that a strong offensive second half can lead to a better showing than the one it had in the Egg Bowl the previous season, when it averaged less than half of the Rebels’ season total of 2.0 yards per carry and managed just 22 points. They are 12th in the country in yards per play and have a victory over LSU on their record, but considering what transpired when they truly stepped up in class, they might be a little bit of an underappreciated asset.
Mississippi State defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 41–20 to move a bit closer to bowl eligibility. Through 98 yards and a touchdown, Jeffrey Pittman led the Bulldogs’ 238-yard rushing effort. Additionally, QB Will Rogers threw for 2 scores. Most importantly, last game marked just the 2nd time that Mississippi State prevailed in the turnover war. With the exception of a five-takeaway performance versus Arizona, the Bulldogs’ defense has had trouble forcing errors. They have been strong throwing the ball and that might persuade Kiffin to go with a passing attack more often. Despite possessing an asset like Dart, he has made the decision to rush the ball almost 57% of the time, placing him in the top 25% of the most prolific rushing teams in the game.
