The University of North Carolina Tar Heels are going to face the Syracuse Orange in Week 6 following a week off. The Tar Heels have played well behind head coach Mack Brown, highlighted by NFL quarterback draft candidate Drake Maye, amid the ongoing loss of transfer wideout Tez Walker who has been serving a ban due to NCAA eligibility rules.
Despite coming from a bye week, North Carolina defeated Pittsburgh 41–24 on the road on September 23. In the game, QB Drake Maye completed 22 of 30 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown while running back Omarion Hampton ran the ball on 18 occasions for 66 yards and a score. Maye continues to be a prodigious passer, completing more than 72% of his passes for close to 1,200 yards and 5 touchdowns. Since Mac Brown’s remarkable comeback in his second tenure at Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s defense has never been better. The Tar Heels’ total defense ranking is 64th, and their defense yards per play ranking is 48th.
On Saturday, Syracuse lost 31-14 against the Clemson Tigers. Garrett Shrader, the quarterback, completed 15 of 29 passes for 179 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. His scores came from his connections with WRs LeQuint Allen and Dan Villari. The Orange are quite strong, ranking 6th in yards allowed per play with only 4.3 and twentieth overall in total defense. By stopping Omarrion Hampton and the running game, they could put the whole contest on Drake Maye’s shoulder given that they are 12th in yards per rush with 2.7.
The football will be aggressively pushed downfield by UNC, leading to numerous trips to the red zone. Despite Syracuse’s good start, Maye and Hampton are even more dangerous so near the end zone, thus their kind of play is not designed to stay up with UNC.
