Music City Bowl: Auburn vs Maryland Analysis & Predictions 12/30/2023

Game Preview

On December 30, at Nissan Stadium, the Music City Bowl will pit the Auburn Tigers against the Maryland Terrapins.

With a 6-6 record, the Auburn Tigers have a mixed bag going into the Music City Bowl. Recent results, such as a close 27-24 loss to Alabama, demonstrate that this team can still be competitive even in the face of irregularities. Auburn’s strength is its rushing attack, which is led by Jarquez Hunter’s 865 rushing yards and ranks 15th in the country at 198.8 yards per game. But the passing game isn’t up to par, coming in at 125th place with only 157.1 yards per contest. With an acceptable ratio of 10 touchdowns to 5 interceptions, quarterback Payton Thorne has passed for 1671 yards, which is indicative of an offense that has had trouble being consistent in the air. The Tigers’ defensive statistics are average, giving up 21.9 points per contest.

With a 7-5 record, the Maryland Terrapins will enter the Music City Bowl with a more well-rounded offensive line. Notable victories throughout the season, like a 42-24 triumph over Rutgers, show that the team can perform under pressure in big moments. Maryland’s offense, which ranks 21st in the country with 284.8 passing yards per game, is strong in the air and is led by Taulia Tagovailoa’s 3377 passing yards. Auburn’s defense will be put to the test by this strong passing attack, especially in light of Maryland’s scoring average of 29.6 points per game. However, the Terrapins’ running strategy is less successful; with just 108.9 yards per game, it ranks 117th. Maryland has had a respectable defensive record, giving up 23.3 points per game. Their pass defense has been especially strong, limiting rivals to 207.3 yards per game via the air, so they’ll be looking to give the Tigers a hard time.
