The Virginia Cavaliers and the Duke Blue Devils meet Saturday in college football action from Wallace Wade Stadium. Virginia is coming off a matchup versus Syracuse, taking a tough two-point loss. As for Duke, they played Kansas back on Saturday. In that game the Blue Devils lost by eight points.
Virginia opened up the year with a matchup versus Richmond, taking a 34-17 victory. The Cavaliers couldn’t find any success versus Illinois and fell in a 24-3 result the next week. Virginia was able to get back on track the next week with a 16-14 win over Old Dominion.
The Cavaliers fell back into the loss column on Friday with their matchup against Syracuse. Virginia was down 16-0 heading into halftime but made a game of it in a 22-20 defeat. QB Brennan Armstrong put up 138 yards with one TD and a pick.
Over on the Duke side, they didn’t have any problems with Temple in their opener, cruising to a 30-0 win. The Blue Devils got past Northwestern 31-13 in game two, then took out NC A&T in a 49-20 result on September 17 to go 3-0 on the year.
Matched up against Kansas on Saturday, Duke scored 14 points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t make the comeback in a 35-27 loss. QB Riley Leonard put up 324 yards with one TD, and also led the rush with 54 yards on 10 carries.
The Blue Devils fell short over the weekend against a great Kansas team, but still put up some pretty good numbers in the loss. Duke posted 463 total yards with 23 first downs and 6.5 yards per play. They went just 5-of-15 on third-down tries however, and fell behind early.
As for Virginia, they’ve certainly got some things to work on this week. The Cavaliers were just 3-of-12 on third downs in the Syracuse game, posting 12 penalties and two turnovers along the way. Virginia is going to need a big turnaround if they’re going to compete here.
