Game Preview
The Pittsburgh Steelers are leading the AFC North despite having the worst offense in the league and having lost by a score of 30-7 in Week 1. After improving to 2-1 with a victory on Sunday Night Football in Sin City, the Steelers will travel to take on the Texans in Week 4.
Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson led the team to its first victory of the season, a 37-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. CJ Stroud has been excellent, and he gives Houston a leg up in key Week 4 matchups.
Kenny Pickett, who had shown for two weeks that he was not an NFL quarterback, made amends in Sin City. In his first career game with multiple passing touchdowns, Pickett went 16-28 for 235 yards and two scores against the Raiders.
Already, three games into the season, CJ Stroud has made the Panthers’ decision to pass on him look foolish. Stroud has thrown for 906 yards, scoring four times and throwing no picks. His first career victory came last week against Jacksonville, when he threw for 280 yards and a touchdown.
The Steelers currently hold a 2-1 record, are in first place in the AFC North, and are heavy favorites to win this week’s game. However, they rank last in overall offense, 22nd in yards per play (averaging only 5.0), 30th in rushing offense (averaging just 4.0 yards per carry), 17th in passing offense (averaging 3.0 yards per attempt), and 22nd in yards per pass attempt (averaging just 2.7 yards).
The Steelers are also last in the league in total yards allowed, yards per play allowed, yards per rush allowed, yards per throw attempt allowed, and yards per pass defense.
According to the numbers, Pittsburgh is a terrible football club with a lackluster offensive play-caller and a huge question mark at quarterback in their second season together. Mike Tomlin, though, has, as always, figured out a way to win games.
The Houston Texans, on the other hand, are a youthful team led by an exciting young franchise quarterback and coached by young players from Kyle Shanahan’s coaching tree. Remember, he’s the head coach of the club who shut out Kenny Pickett and Pittsburgh in Week 1.
