On Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars will host the Pittsburgh Steelers in an encounter that will serve as a yardstick matchup between two AFC postseason candidates.
As the football season heads towards November, neither team has been flawless, but they have both demonstrated excellent traits that have propelled them to their current respectable places. In Week 7, Jacksonville defeated the Saints 31-24 after playing a crazy Thursday night game. Pittsburgh defeated the Rams 24-17 while playing in Los Angeles.
After beginning their campaign 1-2, the Jaguars have found their footing in the first half of the campaign. Following a victory over the Saints on “Thursday Night Football,” they have gone on to win 4 straight games. For a team hoping to go unbeaten in October, Trevor Lawrence is leading the offense while Travis Etienne keeps finding the end zone.
The Jaguars’ 31-24 victory had quite a bit of everything. Fantastic defensive and offensive plays, a thrilling comeback, a fantastic late score to win the contest, and a couple shocks to top it all off. Even though Trevor Lawrence only completed 20 of his 29 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, he didn’t need his full effort since everyone in this victory gave their all.
This could be the Steelers’ offensive tipping point. Though the offense hasn’t completely changed, Kenny Pickett and crew are beginning to play better, and the defense is still shutting down opponents, as shown by the team’s victory on the road over the Rams.
If the Pittsburgh Steelers have a formula for winning, it involves playing slow at first to give their defense time to maintain a score close, then taking over in the latter stages. They repeated it against the Rams on Sunday in Los Angeles, as well as a few other times during the previous season. George Pickens and Kenny Pickett are a connection made in heaven, and it always helps to have wide receiver Diontae Johnson returning healthy. While trailing 9-3 at halftime as well as 17-10 in the 3rd period, the Steelers lived up to their current playing card by making all the third down stops required to give their offense the opportunities it needed to turn the tide.
