FedExField in Landover, Maryland hosts this Thursday Night Football matchup between the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders. Chicago has had an uncharacteristically rocky start while Sam Howell’s squad have struggled defensively while searching for their offensive groove. Chicago is currently sitting at 0-4 and looking for their first win of the season. For Washington they will be aiming to claim a positive record in this match as they stand 2-2.
Last week against the Denver Broncos, the Bears showed signs of life on offense with a more effective second half performance than their poor first. Now at home against the Commanders this week, they hope to build off of this momentum and keep improving against an opponent that boasts great offensive talent.
Justin Fields played an instrumental role in the second half turnaround thanks to his improved efficiency, and it is expected that he will only become even better against a weak Commanders pass defense. Fields delivered four touchdown passes and threw for a 335 yard career high during his performance against Broncos; it would not be surprising for him to repeat that performance against Commanders.
The Commanders tied their record at 2-2 after forcing the reigning NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles to overtime before losing on the road. For the game versus the Cears, one key factor will be evaluating the Commanders’ rushing defense, which has been among the worst in the league this season. They have allowed an opponent rushing touchdown on 16% of drives they have faced and an average rushing yardage per carry of 4.5 yards allowed per attempt.
The Commanders have made strides to improve their passing defense this season, yet are still susceptible to big plays and turnovers. Their opponents have managed to hit quarterbacks on 28% of passes and average 7.7 sacks per game on average.
