After three consecutive losses, Newcastle United will try to get back on track this weekend at St. James’ Park when they host Burnley. The Clarets have yet to record a league victory this season.
Not only did Newcastle have a rough start to the new Premier League season, but Eddie Howe’s future with the club was also called into question. Since dropping three in a row, Newcastle has responded brilliantly by winning its last two Premier League games.
Their most recent win came last Sunday, when they shut out Sheffield United 8-0 on the road. It was their largest Premier League away win to that point and their largest win overall since an 8-0 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday in 1999. In that victory, a league-record eight different players scored goals.
Burnley have had a difficult time adjusting to life in the Premier League this season, as they have yet to win a league game. Last Saturday, Man United cruised to a 1-0 victory at Turf Moor thanks in large part to a lackluster performance from the Clarets in the last third of the field. This weekend’s performance must have greater energy in the final period.
For the fifth time in the last nine years, Burnley has gotten off to a sluggish start in the Premier League, failing to win any of their first five games. In Premier League history, only Newcastle has started the season with a perfect record more often.
With four consecutive victories over the Clarets, Newcastle has a strong recent record in this matchup. That’s a remarkable turnaround, since they’d only won four of the 16 league meetings between the teams before. However, in their last nine trips to Newcastle, Burnley has failed to secure a victory.
