Liverpool, who have gotten off to a solid start in the current Premier League season, will play host to Aston Villa this weekend. Since their opening day loss, the visitors have won two straight.
Liverpool, under Jurgen Klopp’s direction, has started the season strong, winning their first three matches without suffering a single defeat. After starting the season with a draw at Chelsea, the Reds have won their last two games.
Liverpool relied on luck to come back from a 1-0 hole to beat Newcastle 2-1 in their most recent match. The match took place at St. James’s Park. The Reds scored twice in the closing ten minutes to steal all three points from the Blues, who were down to ten men and had only 40% of the game’s possession. Liverpool have now recorded 42 last-minute winners in the Premier League, as the game-winning goal was scored in the 90th minute.
The Aston Villa squad, riding a hot streak of late, will travel to Liverpool to take on the Reds at Anfield on Sunday. Arsenal, led by Unai Emery, have won their previous two games after suffering a crushing defeat to Newcastle on the season’s opening day.
Last Saturday, Aston Villa dominated on the road against Burnley, with two goals from the unlikeliest of heroes, Matty Cash. The game was decided in the second half when Moussa Diaby scored his second goal of the season. With this victory, Emery’s team now has as many Premier League victories as only Manchester City and Arsenal have had since his arrival.
Since losing 7-2 to Villa at Villa Park in October 2020, Liverpool has gone five Premier League matches without losing to Villa. However, in their most recent meeting in May, a 1-1 draw at Anfield split the spoils.
Before this matchup at Anfield, Aston Villa should be given a lot of credit for their impressive away record. The fact that Virgil van Dijk won’t be playing this weekend for the Reds is potentially huge.
