On Wednesday night, Torino will travel to take on Lazio for the second half of their capital doubleheader. The Granata will be putting their depth to the test for the first time this season after playing just three days after a match against the Aquile’s city rivals, Roma.
Ivan Juric’s squad didn’t do much to improve over the summer, opting to make loan transfers permanent and replace the right back position with an identical player. Fans are thrilled about newcomer Duvan Zapata, but the Colombian’s performance so far in Turin has fallen short of expectations.
On the other hand, Lazio added several intriguing new faces over the summer, including Mateo Guendouzi, Daichi Kamada, and Valentin Castellanos. Due to their current schedule of playing twice per week, the Aquile need this depth to succeed against Torino.
Since weariness is a real possibility and Zapata still hasn’t scored, the visitors might try to go back to their defensive strategies from last year. Juric’s squad had one of the strongest defensive units in the league last year, and they’ll look to slow down Lazio’s offense on Wednesday. Keeping the score at the Stadio Olimpico to under 2.5 goals is easier said than done, but we’re backing Il Toro to do just that.
None of the teams’ last five meetings have produced more than two goals, so we could be in for a low-scoring midweek clash based on history.
Torino have a particularly impressive record against Lazio, having lost none of their last five meetings and winning last year’s meeting 1-0. It wouldn’t be too surprising if the Granata held the Aquile’s front line quiet for a fourth straight match, as they have in the previous three meetings.
If the visitors’ defense plays to its potential, a draw could be the most likely outcome for the fans, which would add to Lazio’s woes this season.
