Relegation
The Serie A 2022-23 season is set to kick off really soon, and while we like to talk about the best teams, there are some squads that will try their best to secure league safety. We’ll be talking about the teams that will most likely end up falling in the relegation zone and ultimately pave their way into Serie B, which is Italy’s 2nd division.
During last year’s season, Salernitana, Sampdoria and Spezia all narrowly avoided the drop last season, finishing in the three places above last year’s relegated teams. But are they capable of surviving one more year?
Salernitana (-230)
Salernitana is one of those teams that should have dropped down last season, at least on paper. Fortunately for them, they were able to pull-off some good performances during the later stages of the season, which secured them league safety. They finished the season losing only 1 out of their last 8 games.
Cremonese (-160)
Cremonese is one of the two newly-promoted teams that are looking to make it all the way back to where they came from. Despite achieving promotion, coach Fabio Pecchia resigned from his post. Now the team will be under Massimiliano Alvini’s wings, who is coming off a short stint with Serie B team Perugia.
Spezia (+140)
While Spezia had a strong record against the other teams in the bottom of the standings, they struggled throughout the majority of the 2021-22 season, which makes it safe to say that they are amongst the favorite teams to relegate.
Without strong reinforcements, Spezia is aiming for the bottom-part of the standings as it’s hard to expect different results from them in this upcoming season.
Lecce (+150)
Just like Cremonese, Lecce is one of the newly-promoted teams, and due to their lack of firepower, they are definitely going to be struggling even against the lower-rated Serie A teams. They just lost their best striker, Massimo Coda, who was top scorer of Serie B for two seasons in a row in 2020–21 and 2021–22.
This team is going to need some really good luck and a lot of hard work if they want to even stay away from relegation zone this season.
Empoli (+320)
Empoli finished 14th place last season, which is far away from the relegation zone. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t do much during the off-season to prevent them from falling down the standings.
What might give their fans some hope is that they had a decent pre-season, winning all of their games which should give them some confidence during the start of the season.
