Stoke-on-Trent’s own Maverick Masoud makes his return after almost one year away when he takes on Colombian Jose Sanmartin at Utilita Arena, Newcastle England on Saturday evening.
At an official weigh-in ceremony earlier this week, both fighters paid tribute to those lost by meeting the 122 lb junior featherweight limit and making weight. Following this ceremony, both entered onto stage to exchange ringwalks before an intriguing fight at Utilita Arena in Newcastle.
Masoud, at 26, boasts excellent technical abilities. As a fast puncher who can use his superior reach to exploit any mistakes from opponents, Masoud also possesses superior footwork, movement, and ring IQ; though lacking some of the power seen from world-ranked fighters at his weight class he still possesses enough punch power to stop opponents in multiple rounds as evidenced by his 12th round knockout win against compatriot Jack Bateson in November 2015.
Sanmartin, at 41, has seen some of his share of fights over the years. While most expect him to be fragile and frail in nature, Sanmartin has proven his worth time after time; stopping 21 out of 34 foes using only power when necessary and should not be taken lightly in battle.
Masoud will have much to prove in his debut title fight but should make an impressive first impression against an experienced opponent who will provide an intense challenge. Etruria boxer Bateson was an eager challenger; Masoud will want to put on a show for home supporters.
Both boxers have shown promise so far, yet this marks an immense challenge for both. Masoud will likely need to work on his defensive strategies against an opponent like Sanmartin.
