This year, England will host a major match once more. In what will be his first major match of a lengthy career, local Chris Billam-Smith will defend his WBO cruiserweight world championship against Mateusz Masternak of Poland.
Billam-Smith, who defeated Lawrence Okolie in May of this year to earn his first orbital title, is a fighter who has gone a long way to reach his current position. He won’t have an easy fight, though, as the veteran Polish fighter, who has never competed for a world-class title, is up against his biggest sporting opportunity. There will be two perspectives to this story: the opponent, who is 36 years old and has more ring experience, is a local with a strong fan base and is used to huge evenings. However, the winner must prevail in order to remain relevant.
British fighter Chris Billam-Smith, 33, is currently enjoying the sweet taste of victory for the initial time in his professional career. Since May of this year, he has been the World Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion. It was against his fellow countryman Lawrence Okolie that he prevailed via scorecard in his final bout. He knocked down his rival three times on that occasion. Though he is the finest boxer in his country, he is now ranked third in the globe in his class. He goes by “The Gentleman.” He uses an orthodox fighting technique that mostly depends on power.
Mateusz Masternak, a 36-year-old fighter from Poland, will only now get the chance to chase a title that would establish him as a world champion. Masternak has fought 52 times in his career. Masternak has fought on British soil before; in 2015, he lost to Tony Bellew on points in a bout for the vacated European belt. Since the bout will take place in the British man’s hometown of Bournemouth, the Pole, who will appear to be a complete tourist, will have his seventeen-year career summed up on a single night. His record is 47–5, with only one loss via knockout in 31 victories.
