Fight Preview
Former champion Anthony Joshua fights former contender Robert Helenius this weekend from London’s O2 Arena in what is expected to be Joshua’s final fight before a blockbuster bout with Deontay Wilder. Joshua was planning on facing former opponent Dillian Whyte, but Whyte failed a drug test, giving Helenius a chance to resurrect his career.
After Dillian Whyte, former competitor Robert Helenius, who is still dangerous despite his weakened state, will be Anthony Joshua’s next opponent. With more time to gel with new trainer Derrick James, this bout, whether against Whyte or Helenius, is likely to feature a more dynamic Joshua. Against Jermaine Franklin, an opponent who is difficult to look good against, Joshua gave a solid, efficient performance and won handily.
Joshua still needs to show he’s ready for a major fight, even though Whyte is out of the picture. Joshua, at his best, is a two-fisted killer with lightning-fast footwork and a variety of devastating finishing blows at his disposal. His physical abilities are unquestioned, but his steady decrease in self-esteem and mental stability have led many to conclude that the 33-year-old is about to collapse.
Helenius will be arriving late to work, but he will not be forced to get off the couch in exchange for salary. The Nordic Nightmare recently fought and won a knockout victory over Mika Mielonen. Helenius is a dependable veteran despite being a long way from his 2013 prime and fresh off a first-round knockout loss to Wilder in 2018.
When Joshua’s opponent changed so soon before a bout before, Andy Ruiz beat him and won the heavyweight belt and Joshua’s heart. Joshua now has a golden opportunity to shine and make up for lost ground. Helenius might add another upset to his record if he isn’t up to the challenge or is ignoring him in favor of a reported super showdown with Wilder.
