Unbeaten This coming Saturday, September 16th, lightweight William Zepeda of Mexico faces off against Mercito Gesta of the Philippines over the course of 12 rounds.
Zepeda, 27, is a southpaw with a perfect record of 28-0 and 24 knockouts. With a knockout percentage of 85.7%, it’s easy to see why he’s become a household figure in the sport.
After an amateur career that included bouts in the World Series of Boxing, he made his professional debut in 2015 and has since boxed 125 rounds; however, only two of his last three bouts, against former world champions Rene Alvarado and Joseph Diaz, have gone beyond the sixth round.
Zepeda, who is 5-feet-9-inches tall and has a 69.5-inch reach, fought above his weight class in those two bouts, but he won both by wide unanimous decision. He defeated Diaz over 12 rounds and Alvarado over 10.
Before that, he had significant victories over heavyweights such as Jose Fierros, Jesus Zazueta, Jose Rosales, and Roberto Ramirez. After turning pro, Zepeda defeated Hector Tanajara in six rounds to win the vacant WBA Continental Americas Lightweight Title in July 2021. Four months later, he successfully defended his title against John Vincent Moralde in four rounds.
San Diego-based 35-year-old boxer Gesta with a record of 34-3-3 and 17 knockouts (Kos). His power isn’t very impressive, since he has only one stoppage in his last ten fights and a 50% knockout ratio. After being stopped and dropped a couple times, his chin is dubious.
In 2012, he attempted to win the IBF Lightweight Title, but Miguel Vazquez won by unanimous decision. He didn’t lose again until 2018, when he challenged Jorge Linares for the WBC Diamond and WBA Lightweight Belts and lost by majority decision.
In 2019, Juan Antonio Rodriguez of the ninth round was responsible for his last loss. His three draws came via technical knockout in the sixth and tenth rounds against Carlos Morales (2019) and Carlos Molina (2015 and 2005), respectively. After turning professional shortly after turning 16 in 2003, Gesta has fought 264 rounds.
