Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo’s undercard feature a welterweight title fight between Yordenis Ugas and Mario Barrios for the interim WBC title at 147 pounds.
Since it is increasingly doubtful that 147-pound division undisputed champion Terence Crawford will return, his four belts are expected to be vacated. There is more at risk than just an interim title for the victor between Ugas and Barrios because the victor will likely be elevated to full titleholder.
Ugas competed for Cuba at the 2008 Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the lightweight category. He started his professional career in 2010, going 15-3 until finally finding his footing in 2016 with an upset victory over undefeated Jamal James.
Ugas lost the WBC welterweight title to Shawn Porter through split decision in his first title fight, but he was able to win the WBA belt by shocking the famous Manny Pacquiao in August 2021.
Despite being 37 years old, Yordenis Ugas has never given his competition an easy time. Few boxers were able to have their way with him, with his Cuban amateur style combined with his ability to avoid punishment.
In April of 2022, Ugas risked his title against Errol Spence, but he was stopped and sustained an eye injury that sidelined him for over a year. Ugas, now 37 years old, plans to come back and try to regain his former prominence.
A promising career was off to a great start for Barrios (27-2, 18 KOs). He dominated the super lightweight division with his 5’10” frame and 71″ reach until he met Gervonta Davis in June 2021, who knocked him out in the 11th round.
Barrios felt he had outgrown the lightweight division and made his welterweight debut in February of last year, losing a close fight against Keith Thurman. His February win over Jovanie Santiago placed him back into the win column, but he still has to establish his worth by defeating Ugas.
