Fight Preview
On Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Charles F. Dodge City Center in Pembroke Pines, Florida will feature two high-stakes fights. Cuban WBO featherweight champion Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez puts his crown up for grabs against unbeaten Mexican challenger Rafael “El Divino” Espinoza for main event contention, while Puerto Rican junior middleweight sensation Xander Zayas battles Spain’s Jorge Fortea in 10-round co-feature.
Zayas (17-0, 11 KOs) signed in October 2019 and has made steady progress as he climbs through the 154-pound division. In June he earned an eight-round unanimous decision against Ronald Cruz before following up that win with an explosive fifth round TKO win against Roberto Valenzuela Jr. In September his opponent Roberto Valenzuela Jr was knocked out.
21-year-old Zayas exudes maturity well beyond his years, as his boxing is reminiscent of some of boxing’s past greats such as former world champion Miguel Cotto and Felix Trinidad. He possesses an amazing knack for anticipating opponents’ movements before unleashing devastating combinations – something many critics see as promising signs that he may one day become a superstar in the sport.
Fortea (24-3-1, 9 KOs) has been fighting professionally for 13 years in the super welterweight division and most often within this weight class. A tall and powerful fighter who has battled quality opponents as well as been outclassed by lesser men.
Fortea has proven himself more consistent than Zayas having more experience, with power and speed that should make his opponent wary of him. Fortea boasts a 3-inch reach advantage as well as a 65% knock out percentage; his younger opponent boasts 12-years less of experience.
Zayas could likely dominate from start to finish in this matchup and may be able to claim another victory by finishing off Fortea early. Expect him to unleash his potent left hook in the early rounds as he solidifies himself as one of the sport’s up-and-coming talents while Fortea is no easy pushover and will look to get an opportunistic win on December 9.
