On Friday, the Bundesliga season resumes for RB Leipzig, who will host their first home game of the season at the Red Bull Arena. After losing their season opener to Bayer Leverkusen, Marco Rose will be looking for a response from his team. Stuttgart, however, appears to be capable of asking significant questions of the hosts.
After cruising to a 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the Super Cup final, the German team RB Leipzig entered their season opener full of confidence. However, Leipzig’s early season success came to an abrupt halt when they fell behind Leverkusen 2-0 in their Bundesliga debut.
Dani Olmo scored for the visitors just before halftime to make things interesting. But Leverkusen started the second half strong, and they quickly increased their lead. Leipzig’s second goal was scored by Lois Openda, but the team was unable to mount a comeback in the closing minutes of the season opener.
On the first weekend of the season, Stuttgart made quite a statement with a 5-0 home win over Bochum. The German team put on a clinical performance, with Serhou Guirassy and Silas Katompa Mvumpa each scoring twice. One of their defenders, Dan-Axel Zagadou, scored their sixth goal.
Stuttgart’s first-game victory was narrower than it should have been because the team attempted nine shots on goal. Despite a dismal 2022-23 season, their prospects appear to be improving after a promising showing in the season opener.Across all competitions, Leipzig has won their last 10 meetings with Stuttgart. During that span, they are 8-2 with a 1.8-goal-per-game average. A 0-0 draw in August of 2022 was the only point Stuttgart had taken from Leipzig in their last eight tries in the Bundesliga.
Stuttgart performed superbly in their season opener, but they will be tested this weekend against a Leipzig team eager to get back on track. It’s hard to look beyond Leipzig’s stellar history in this matchup, so we’re picking them to win for the first time this season on Friday.
