Bayern Munich, Germany’s defending champions, will play home to Bundesliga newcomers Werder Bremen on Friday as they take the first step toward a potential 12th straight title. Bayern have much to prove after their humiliating loss in the DFL-Supercup when they travel to Weserstadion, where they have won on their last 14 occasions and Werder scored the fewest points of any team at home in the league last year.

Last season, despite a general decrease in play, Bayern were again Germany’s top away team, picking up 33 points on the road to win the title by a single point over Borussia Dortmund, Tuchel’s former club; Bremen, meanwhile, had 10 home defeats. Since the defending Bundesliga champions have not lost their opening match in 21 seasons, history seems to be on Bayern’s side before the teams meet on opening night.
Werder Bremen has not started a Bundesliga season with a win in the last eight years, and they have lost more games to Bayern Munich than to any other team (60 and counting). Die Grun-Weissen lost 2-1 at home to the Bavarians at the close of the season, contributing to their 13th-place finish in their first season back in the Bundesliga.
After a week off from competition, 10-man Werder were eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by 3. All of Werder’s goals were scored in the final 20 minutes of the game. In what may be a fight to the finish, Bremen will look to Niclas Fullkrug, who scored 15 goals for the Bundesliga’s top club last season, to lead them to safety.
