On Saturday, the Bundesliga season kicks off with Bayer Leverkusen hosting Super Cup champions RB Leipzig at BayArena. Leipzig kicked off their season with a 5-0 demolition of Bayern Munich, while Xabi Alonso’s squad had a promising preseason.
Leverkusen had a terrible start to the previous season, but Alonso was able to steady the ship and lead the team to the Europa League semi-finals and sixth place. On Saturday, the Spanish manager will take the field for the first time in his new role when they host Leipzig at the BayArena. They will be hoping to get off to a good start as they pursue a Champions League berth.
The game on Saturday in North Rhine-Westphalia is important even at this early stage of the season because the points could be crucial for Bayer later on. Last Saturday, in their first competitive match, they played Teutonia Ottensen in the DFB Cup and won 8-0, with goals from newcomers Victor Boniface and Jonas Hofmann.
With the Red Bulls still riding high from their 3-0 Super Cup victory over Bayern last week, they aren’t likely to face a submissive Leipzig team on Saturday. Marco Rose’s squad won the season’s opening title thanks to a hat trick from Dani Olmo, but this weekend at BayArena is where things become serious.
Since Rose took over in September of last year, Die Roten Bullen have amassed 61 points, the most of any team in the Bundesliga. Bayern Munich is second with 60 points. The club’s new arrivals appear to have adjusted, suggesting that Leipzig should not worry too much about losing Josko Gvardiol to Manchester City, Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea, or Dominik Szoboszlai to Liverpool.
After Alonso took over as manager, the club improved from last to sixth, giving the team hope for the 2023–24 season. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if last Saturday’s outcome was an outlier, but if Rose’s men want to unseat Thomas Tuchel’s side, they’ll need to show consistency in the league.
