Wolfsburg will host Heidenheim, a team that was promoted to the Bundesliga for the 2023–24 season, on the opening weekend of the 2023–24 season. The Wolves’ first season under Niko Kovac as head coach was successful, as Heidenheim made history by winning the second division for the first time in the club’s history.
Wolfsburg did indeed improve from a dismal 12th-place finish the previous season to a respectable eighth place this year, despite getting off to a sluggish start under Kovac. Although Kovac’s Wolves started 0-5, they went on a 6-game winning streak before and after the winter World Cup to rocket into contention for a European playoff position.
However, they were unable to make the Europa League after losing three of their final four games of the season. Their loss on the final day of the season at home against a Hertha Berlin team that had already been relegated was especially disappointing.
Kovac may look at his team’s shortened schedule as a gift in disguise if they are serious about making a run at the Champions League again, but after trading away key players like Micky van de Ven to Tottenham Hotspur and Felix Nmecha to Borussia Dortmund, that seems unlikely.
Against Makkabi of the fifth tier in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Sunday, Felix’s brother Lukas Nmecha began the scoring, and new signing Tiago Tomas bagged a brace on debut during an easy 6-0 triumph. Kovac is anticipating similar results on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Heidenheim will be making their Bundesliga debut this weekend when they go to Lower Saxony. They recently won the Bundesliga 2 championship. Since 2007, Frank Schmidt has been the leader, replacing Greuther With their staunch defender Furth leading the way, Heidenheim have become one of the most romantic stories in contemporary football.
They won the championship in the most dramatic fashion possible without having to go through the play-off procedure for the second time in four seasons. Heidenheim, like their upcoming opponents, started the German domestic season with a DFB-Pokal victory over lower-tier competition on Sunday. On Saturday, Schmidt and his team will play at the Volkswagen Arena against a far more formidable opponent.
