Borussia Mönchengladbach, fresh off a wild 4-4 draw with Augsburg in the Bundesliga’s opening weekend, will welcome Xabi Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen this Saturday. Die Werkself, coming off a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig in their previous match, will face their old boss Gerardo Seoane at Borussia-Park.
Franck Honorat and Tomas Cvancara each scored twice when Borussia Monchengladbach opened their season with a 7-0 DFB-Pokal win over lower-league team Bersenbruck earlier this month. The Foals played out a crazy 4-4 draw with Augsburg on the first weekend of the Bundesliga season, another high-scoring thriller in which neither team could come away with all three points.
Gladbach appeared to be in command at the WWK Arena after taking a 3-1 lead after 37 minutes, but with 15 minutes left in regulation time, the visitors found themselves down 4-3 after allowing Augsburg to get back into the game. Cvancara, fresh off a brace in the DFB-Pokal, scored an equalizer in the 97th minute to give his club a point and keep Gladbach manager Gerardo Seoane unblemished in his first two games in charge.
Bayer Leverkusen, like Gladbach, started the season with a rout of lower-league competition in the DFB-Pokal, defeating Teutonia Ottensen 8-0 while holding a 67% possession advantage and taking 22 shots. With goals from Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, and Florian Wirtz, Die Werkself followed up that success with a win in the opening weekend of the Bundesliga season, defeating RB Leipzig by a score of 3-2.
When you consider that two weeks ago, Leipzig defeated Bayern Munich 3-0 in the DFL-Supercup, many predicted that they would have a strong start to the season in the Bundesliga. Also, the Black and Reds only lost two of their final thirteen Bundesliga matches last season under Xabi Alonso, allowing them to secure a spot in the Europa League.
With last weekend’s win, Alonso improved his win percentage as Leverkusen manager to 48.7% after 39 games, with a record of 19 wins, 10 draws, and 10 losses since replacing Seoane.
