This weekend, the Bundesliga returns with a mediocre Borussia Monchengladbach taking on a formidable Stuttgart on Sunday.
Stuttgart, who returned from their trip on Sunday in 3rd position in the German Bundesliga, is hoping to capitalize on a much better beginning of the season. Die Roten, who narrowly avoided relegation last year by surviving the relegation playoff, have already surpassed last year’s point total in their first 16 games. They presently have 34 points, 4 fewer than leading Bayer Leverkusen and 8 below second-place Bayern Munich. More significantly, Sebastian Hoeness’s team has emerged from a difficult run of games with a win, and they now hold a seven-point advantage over Borussia Dortmund in the 5th spot in the battle for the top 4 slots. They defeated Augsburg 3-0 in the final match before Christmas, thanks to goals from Chris Fuhrich, Serhou Guirassy, and Deniz Undav. Earlier in the month, they hosted Bayer Leverkusen and earned a point from a 1-1 tie. A trip to Bayern Munich ended in a 3-0 loss.
After a dismal start to the new season in 2023, Borussia Monchengladbach will resume competitive play on Sunday in an attempt to spark a change in their Bundesliga fortunes. Die Fohlen, who placed 10th the previous time, are now in 12th position after 16 games with a meager 17 points, having only recorded 4 victories and 7 losses. Gerardo Seoane’s team has struggled at the defense thus far; only Darmstadt has given up more goals than they have allowed up. They entered the winter break in the throes of a dismal run in December, losing 3-1 away to struggling Union Berlin. After that, Die Fohlen hosted Werder Bremen and fell to a 2-2 tie despite leading 2-1 thanks to a brace from Rocco Reitz. Most recently, however, they faced a difficult trip to Eintracht Frankfurt and were humiliatingly defeated there. After Max Wober led them 1-0 until injury time, Aurelio Buta and Robin Koch scored goals in the final seconds to turn the game around after Wober was sent off.
