Fight Preview
Artur Beterbiev has been an exemplar of consistency throughout his professional career, compiling an unblemished 19-0 record with all but one fight ending before its scheduled distance. In his last bout against Britain’s Anthony Yarde he successfully retained WBC, IBF, and WBO titles and has also proven his mettle against Joe Smith Jr, Marcus Browne, and Callum Johnson among many other contenders.
Smith is not a first-time challenger to Beterbiev’s title defense line but brings with him a variety of skills for this bout. With powerful punches that could test Beterbiev’s lack of accuracy and defense, Liverpool fighter Smith should feel confident of scoring from range with counter punches from distance.
Beterbiev may not consider himself intimidating, but he is certainly an uncompromising fighter. In his last bout he demonstrated his abilities against tough opposition by stopping both Johnson and Marcus Browne with powerful punches from his arsenal – never breaking down in professional career and consistently being effective across middle and distance distance.
Smith is an outstanding amateur with two divisional Great Britain championships under his belt; and has proved himself capable of transitioning into professional boxing at higher levels. He also holds the super middleweight world title when competing as an amateur.
He is a tall and powerful fighter with an orthodox stance and 72″ reach. Since becoming professional twelve years ago, he has amassed numerous wins against high quality opponents.
Beterbiev boasts an excellent knockout ratio compared to Smith and is looking forward to maintaining his undefeated streak in this fight.
Beterbiev originally intended for their fight to take place last August but had jaw surgery which required postponing it until Saturday night. Beterbiev hopes to strengthen his profile ahead of a potential unification fight with WBA champion Dmitry Bivol. Despite being postponed due to surgery, Smith remains hopeful he has a chance against Bivol.
