It’s safe to say that Eintracht Frankfurt is pleased with their start to the season so far. On Sunday, though, when FC Köln visits, they’ll be hoping to get back on track.
This season, Eintracht Frankfurt will attempt to repeat as a European qualifying team. They’re off to a solid start in the new season, with one win and a draw in their first two games. If they win this weekend, they will enter the international break in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League.
Last weekend, despite a win on the opening matchday, Frankfurt was pushed to a 1-1 draw by their in-town rivals. Mainz should have won all three points in that matchup, since they held a sizable lead for most of the game.
After Ansgar Knauff was sent off for Frankfurt shortly after the hour mark, it looked like their chances were finished. Omas Marmoush scored a remarkable equalizer for his club in the opening minute of injury time with the lone attempt they had on goal.
FC Köln will be the underdogs this weekend in the betting because they have yet to earn their first league point this year. After two consecutive losses, they are currently in last place in the standings. They have only managed one goal in two games, while giving up three.
Last Saturday, they lost at home to Wolfsburg by a score of 2-1, their second loss of the year. The home team put up a good fight that day, and they probably deserved a draw for their efforts. They’ll need to bounce back soon from that second-game loss.
In this matchup, Köln has a stellar record, as they have won their past four matches in a row. Both of their victories during that time frame, though, came at home. Two previous meetings between the two teams in Frankfurt each ended in a 1-1 tie.
