But only Mainz 05 has won fewer games than Bochum, who have won 2 of their last 14 games, heading into this weekend’s action. If they were to suffer another defeat, their rivals would really pass them in the standings based solely on goal differential.
The visitors defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 at home last week to record their first Bundesliga victory since August. First-half goals came from Kevin Volland’s penalty kick and Mikkel Kaufmann and Benedict Hollerbach’s goals in the 2nd half. They lost 3-2 against Real Madrid in their UEFA Champions League matchup as they were unable to capitalize on that performance. They were winless in the group stage after that defeat. Because of this, Bjelica and his team may concentrate entirely on raising their team’s unusually poor league standing. It is a significant fall from grace to be sitting just above the relegation zone on goal differential following 14 games after finishing in the top seven in each of the previous three seasons. The good news is that there is still much of the campaign left, and recent results point to an upward trajectory.
