On the first Saturday of the 2023–24 Bundesliga season, Augsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach will meet at the WWK Arena. The home team barely avoided relegation last year, while the visitors finished in 10th, so they’ll both be looking to make a bigger impact this time around.
While under Enrico Maassen‘s leadership, Augsburg struggled for the majority of the 2017–18 season and narrowly avoided a relegation playoff by losing their final three games. Fuggerstadter lost 2-0 on the road against Borussia M’bach on the season’s final day, but they had won the last three meetings between the two teams at the WWK Arena.
After a dismal season in the Bundesliga, Maassen’s squad had an up-and-down preseason, winning an outstanding match against Ajax of the Eredivisie but losing to Salernitana and Napoli. After that, Augsburg played their first DFB-Pokal encounter, where they were shockingly defeated by 3. Liga side Unterhaching and eliminated from the competition.
Even though Fuggerstadter had more of the ball, the lower-league team only managed two shots on goal, and the home team won 2-0 thanks to goals from Mathias Fetsch and Boipelo Mashigo.
Borussia Monchengladbach, on the other hand, come into the game on the strength of a recent overwhelming success in the DFB-Pokal, a 7-0 victory away to Bersenbruck in which both Franck Honorat and Tomas Cvancara scored braces. The Foals, who have ended in tenth place for the past two seasons, couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season.
Borussia M’bach hasn’t qualified for a European competition since the 2019–20 season, when they made it to the Champions League. Fortunately, they’ve hired Gerardo Seoane, who has experience getting teams to Europe (he led Bayer Leverkusen to a third-place finish in the Bundesliga).
Seoane’s team has a bad away record, ranking third-worst in the league, and it’s a quest that begins this weekend against an opponent they have a horrible recent away record against. They took only 10 points on their travels last season.
