RB Leipzig and Manchester City will lock on horns on matchday 2 of the Champions League on Wednesday, October 4th at Red Bull Arena in Germany. With victories over Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys, respectively, by scores of 3-1, Manchester City and RB Leipzig are currently tied for first place in Group G.
In their previous match, the Bundesliga team tied with Bayern Munich, demonstrating their recent strong play. Yet, this team is unable to be considered anything other than the underdog entering an encounter versus the Premier League’s top team and the defending champion of Europe. In their first UCL match this season, Leipzig defeated Young Boys in Switzerland to tie with Man City for first place in the group. Leipzig enjoyed a 2-0 lead over Bayern in the previously mentioned matchup, but they were unable to hold onto it.
Manchester City has lost consecutive matches in all competitions for the initial time since January of last campaign after losing 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English top flight this past weekend after losing their EFL Cup third-round match at Newcastle United. Prior to this stretch, Man City had only dropped 2 of their past 41 matches. Since his suspension isn’t applicable to UEFA tournaments, Rodri will be available for Wednesday’s encounter despite his absence being felt in City’s most recent losses. The player who is most probable to be dropped from Saturday’s starting lineup versus Wolves is Matheus Nunes. While John Stones is getting close to making his return, he still needs time to recover, but Bernardo Silva might make his return after a brief absence from the field. Long-term absentee Kevin De Bruyne remains a problem for the English club.
Both teams should play an expansive and attractive style of football that appeals to neutral spectators watching from home. This should lead to plenty of open play from both teams from the very start, putting the ball into the box from whistle to whistle.
