On Monday, Mallorca takes a trip to San Mamés, where they’ll kick off their 2022-23 Campaign against Athletic Bilbao. When it comes to Valverde’s side, there’s plenty of room for improvement, especially away from San Mames, an up-and-down record of four wins, nine draws and six defeats on the road last year wasn’t good enough. This time, their target will be European football, having narrowly missed out last season, as well as a cup run like the ones that saw them reach the Copa del Rey final in 2020 and 2021.
Mallorca was in a more uncomfortable situation last season. “We were like ghosts. Those were terrible, terrible days. What we went through I wouldn’t wish on anyone. We were liquidated, screwed, dead,” Mallorca coach Javier Aguirre said. He was talking about the state of the club with two games to go, relegation becoming a reality. But then on the final day, they won in Pamplona and somehow survived. The question now is, can they do it all over again and without the drama this time?
