On Friday night, Athletic Bilbao will go to Basque rivals Alaves hoping to keep up their impressive run of form. The away team is now fourth in the La Liga table with 10 points after five games, while Alaves is in 14th place with just six points.
For the 2022-23 season, Alaves will be aiming to finish no worse than 18th in La Liga after being promoted from the Segunda Division via the playoffs. So far they have had a decent start to the season, placing them in the 14th spot in the standings after collecting six points from five games played.
Alaves lost their first game of the season, 1-0 to Cadiz, but finished the month of August with a 4-3 win against Sevilla and a 1-0 loss to Getafe. After starting the month with a 1-0 win against Alaves, Luis Garcia’s squad has now lost three straight away games. Most recently, they were defeated by Rayo Vallecano by a score of 2-0.
It will be good for Alaves to play in front of their home fans again; in the five La Liga matches between Alaves and Athletic over the past two seasons, the team has won twice in front of their own fans.
Athletic, one of the league’s best clubs, is currently in fourth place after going 3-1-2 in their first five matches (three wins, one draw, and one loss). The Lions lost their season opener 2-0 at home to Real Madrid but bounced back with wins against Osasuna (2-0 on the road) and Real Betis (four goals) at home.
Then, before the international break, Ernesto Valverde’s squad drew 0-0 with Mallorca, but they bounced back to defeat Cadiz by a score of 3-0 in their most recent outing. Last season, the Red and Whites finished in ninth place in La Liga, but this year they will be aiming for a return to European competition.
Athletic boasts two of the league’s most exciting strikers in brothers Inaki and Nico Williams, but it has been Gorka Guruzeta who has led the team in scoring through the first five games of the season with three goals.
