On Friday night, Athletic Bilbao will go to Basque rivals Alaves hoping to keep up their impressive run of form. The away team is now fourth in the La Liga table with 10 points after five games, while Alaves is in 14th place with just six points.
For the 2022-23 season, Alaves will be aiming to finish no worse than 18th in La Liga after being promoted from the Segunda Division via the playoffs. The Lions lost their season opener 2-0 at home to Real Madrid but bounced back with wins against Osasuna (2-0 on the road) and Real Betis (four goals) at home.
Then, before the international break, Ernesto Valverde’s squad drew 0-0 with Mallorca, but they bounced back to defeat Cadiz by a score of 3-0 in their most recent outing. Last season, the Red and Whites finished in ninth place in La Liga, but this year they will be aiming for a return to European competition.
Athletic boasts two of the league’s most exciting strikers in brothers Inaki and Nico Williams, but it has been Gorka Guruzeta who has led the team in scoring through the first five games of the season with three goals.
