When Girona hosts Mallorca at Estadi Montilivi on Saturday, they’ll be looking to keep up their impressive start to the 2023-24 La Liga season. The home team has won 13 points from their first five games, putting them in third place, two points behind league champions Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Mallorca is in 15th place after winning only five points.
Considering this is only Girona’s fourth season at this level of football, their 10th-place La Liga finish last season and again in 2017-18 is all the more impressive. After starting the season with a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad, the White and Reds went on a four-game winning streak, beating Getafe, Sevilla, Las Palmas, and Granada to earn 13 points and move to within two of the league’s top spot.
There is no doubt that they have been one of the finest sides in the division so far this season, but they will face tougher challenges in their next two games against Villarreal and Real Madrid. Before Granada rallied twice in the final 34 minutes of their last match, Michel’s team had a 3-0 lead on the road. Yan Couto scored the game-winning goal for Girona in the 89th minute.
Meanwhile, Mallorca has only won one of their first four matches this season, and that was on the season’s opening weekend against Las Palmas. After dropping consecutive games to Villarreal and Granada, Javier Aguirre’s squad drew 2-2 at home with Athletic Bilbao just before the international break.
With Vedat Muriqi scoring the game’s only goal in the 85th minute, Mallorca secured their first win of the season on Saturday, moving the Pirates up to 15th place in the standings. Last season, Aguirre’s squad finished ninth in La Liga, their best finish at this level of football since the 2011-12 season.
Despite their lackluster start, Mallorca will once again aim for a top-half finish, and a win on Saturday would set them up ideally for next week’s home meeting against a red-hot Barcelona.
