On Friday night, Real Madrid will face off against Celta Vigo looking to make it three wins in a row to start the new La Liga season. Los Blancos are on top of the table with six points after two victories over Athletic Bilbao and Almeria, while Celta are in last place with just one point.
Celta lost their first league game at home to Osasuna by a score of 2-0 on August 13, and they came dangerously close to losing again last weekend to Real Sociedad. Actually, Ander Barrenetxea scored for the home team in the 22nd minute, and it stayed that way until Oscar Mingueza scored in the fourth minute of extra time.
With this win, new manager Rafael Benitez earned his first point in charge and will now face the team he led from June 2015 to January 2016. Celta have been present in Spain’s top flight for the last 12 seasons, but they have only finished in the top half once since the 2015-16 campaign, so there is clear room for improvement.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, is in first place after two games after beating Almeria 3-1 last weekend and Athletic Bilbao 2-0 in their season opener on August 12. In his first two games, 20-year-old Jude Bellingham has been the talk of the town, scoring three goals and appearing right at home on the famed strip.
If Real Madrid can beat Celta on Friday night, it will set them up nicely for their season opener on September 2 against Getafe at home. It would be interesting to see how successful Los Blancos are with their new 4-3-1-2 configuration, with Bellingham playing as the advanced midfielder behind Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, after losing the La Liga title to Barcelona last season.
With a 4-1 victory in the rematch last season, Real Madrid has won six straight league games against Celta and has not lost to the Sky Blues in La Liga since May of 2014. The club has repeatedly stated that they are finished with their transfer business for the summer, despite persistent rumors that Kylian Mbappe could be moved at the eleventh hour.
