On Saturday afternoon in the Spanish capital, Villarreal will travel to play Getafe, looking for only their third La Liga victory of the season. The Deep Blue Ones have been dead last in the league for the past three years in a row, but they showed promise by placing eighth, fifth, and eighth between 2018 and 2020. While Getafe haven’t beaten Villarreal in the league since January of this year, the teams played to a scoreless draw in last year’s equivalent fixture.
Last year, Villarreal finished fifth in La Liga, seven points behind the top four, but the 2023-24 season has gotten off to a rocky start. Earlier this month, head coach Quique Setien was fired after the team’s slow start, and Pacheta was put in charge until the end of the season.
Villarreal is currently in 14th place in La Liga after going 2-2-1 in their first seven matches (two wins, one draw, and four losses for a total of seven points). The Yellow Submarine are now winless in their last six games in all competitions.
